Do the solar lights automatically switch on and off on all models?

Not necessarily. That’s a dawn-to-dusk feature that many solar lights have, but not all. Check the feature list on the lights that interest you to make sure. Some have motion sensors and others have on/off switches.

This will vary greatly depending on their location, the weather in your area, and other factors. What are the Benefits of Solar Garage Lights?

The initial set up for exterior solar lights might seem very expensive. This is especially so if other parts of your run on conventional electrical power and you feel it would have been cheaper to extend the cords. However, solar lights have a horde of advantages, including:

Eco-Friendliness

By using solar lights in your garage, you are using the most renewable source of energy – sunlight. By so doing, you will cut down on the carbon footprint significantly. While it may not seem like much, if we all adopted solar lighting, we would slow down global warming.

Cost-Effectiveness

When you are buying new model solar lights for your garage, you will spend more than you would with conventional lights. However, in the long run, solar lights are cheaper as you will never get electrical bills. After a few months, you will have covered the cost of buying the lights.

Little Maintenance

Once solar lights are set, and the photovoltaic panel is exposed to capture maximum sunlight, you are good to go. All you need to do is ensure the panel, and the lights are clean and exposed to full sunlight.

Choose from Various Styles

Exterior garage lights come in various shapes and sizes to not only serve a functional purpose but also for aesthetics. They are designed in different accents to meet your decorative needs.

Unlimited Source

The sun will always shine above us. Even in areas with minimal sunlight, strong PV panels can absorb light photons to charge the battery. Again, if you live in an area where storms are common, blackouts might be expected too. Solar lights will illuminate your garage in cases of blackouts.

Which Types of Solar Lights are Suitable for Your Garage?

There are different types of solar lights you can install in your home. Solar shed lights and solar deck lights will fit perfectly in your garage.

These lights are designed with metallic housings, instead of the conventional plastic housing, to make them resistant to weather elements. Again, they are designed to automatically go when darkness kicks in and go offer at dawn. The lights have different power settings; notably full power and low power settings.

Features to Consider When Shopping for LED Outside Garage Lights

Lighting Features

When buying solar lights, the more the lighting functions, the more expensive the lights will be. For instance, a solar garage light with motion sensors designed to warn burglars from invading your home will cost more than a simple atmospheric light. Again, if the lighting has more lighting settings, such as automatic on/off and dimming features, it will cost relatively more but will serve you better.

Lighting Effects

For your garage, you do not need the cozy and amble glow that most solar lights offer. These lights, and other colored lights, are meant to beautify your garden. For your garage, you need bright LED garage lights which are not only bright but long-lasting. These lights are designed to offer security.

Besides, check the lighting hues. While most solar lights use LED which gives off a bright white light, incandescent bulbs might come with tinted covers to give off different shades. Because your garage needs security, only choose hues that will offer maximum illumination.

Brightness

Most solar lights use LED bulbs which give off bright white lights. Garage solar lights brightness is measured in lumens. Some models will produce as low as 15 lumens; these give off soft and warm lighting. Others produce as high as 800 lumens; these are great in areas that need brighter security lights such as your garage.

Battery Type and Its Capacity

Most solar lights used Lithium-Ion batteries, but a few use NICAD and Lead Acid batteries. Li-Ion batteries are preferred because they can charge even on days when there is minimal sunlight. Li-Ion batteries have a long life cycle, and they also have a high recharge and discharge rates. For these reasons, choose Li-Ion batteries. Again, consider the capacity of the battery you choose.

Intelligent Functions

Today, solar-powered garage lighting units are designed to operate automatically. Some are designed with modern processors to adapt to the prevailing environment in your home. For instance, some lights are fitted with microprocessors that adjust the lights based on the weather patterns in your home environment.

Other lights are designed to adjust to the light intensity to save energy and last longer. Models with these intelligent features will cost more, but they are more functional.

Taking Care of Your LED Exterior Garage Lights

Your solar lights are powered by sunlight, and as such, you need to clean off the dust and remove the snow that might fall on them. Because the panels do not do well during winter and during the rainy seasons, unplug them and store them away in a dark area.

Solar Deck Lights Buying Guide

This section will talk about all the tips and tricks that will help you choose a perfect type of solar deck lights. After surfing the internet and reading reviews of various users, the following are some aspects you need to inspect in a solar deck light before buying it.

This guide applies to all step lights, solar light, led light, and step lights. Make sure the customer service of the item you choose from the menu is easy to install, comes at a nominal price, and you may consider the design and the color as well. Some years back, there were not many options to choose solar lights, but nowadays it’s relatively easy to get a solar light.

1. Brightness

The first and foremost feature that you need to look for in any solar light is its luminance. Some units have a brightness to keep the deck and the surrounding place visible in the above reviews. And hence help you notice any unexpected movement during the night. In contrast, other lights are so bright that they are sufficient enough for a late-night outdoor party.

So, evaluate the type of deck lights you need for your place. If you are shopping online, you can easily estimate how bright the lights are by checking the number of lumens they possess. The high the lumen count, the brighter the lights will be.

Moreover, different units have different colored lights. While some vary only in their warm and cool tones, others are available in different colors, like VOLISUN’S 12-pack solar deck lights available in blue and yellow LEDs.

On the other hand, deck lights have different modes for different types of lighting. SUNFACE’S 6 pack solar deck lights offers not only standard lighting required during the night, but it can also change into seven different colors! So, evaluate the brightness level and the type of tone and color you want the LEDs to be.

2. Runtime

Another factor that you need to look out for is the runtime. Indeed, you do not want deck lights that dim out in the middle of the night. So, always check the specifications and verified reviews to find out the runtime of these lights and how well they perform.

3. The Type of Solar Panel

Since these are solar deck lights, it is evident that the type of solar panel they use will exponentially affect how they operate. So, always purchase a reliable and durable solar panel. Generally, there are four types of solar panels used in deck lights; monocrystalline solar panels, polycrystalline solar panels, thin-film amorphous solar panels, and the concentrated PV cell.

· Monocrystalline Solar Panels

These have an efficiency rate of 20% and are ideal for commercial purposes. Moreover, they have a long lifetime. However, they are expensive as compared to the rest.

· Polycrystalline Solar Panels

With an efficiency rate of 15, these units are effective in their operation and have a high-performance level. However, if we compare these to monocrystalline solar panels, these are more sensitive to high temperatures.

· Thin-Film Amorphous Silicon Solar Panels

These solar panels have an efficiency rate between 7 to 10% and are inexpensive. They work ideally in sunny conditions.

· Concentrated PV Cell

These have the highest efficiency rate; 41%. They have an almost perfect performance rate. However, you will need a solar tracker and a cooling system since they can get heated quickly.

Conclusion

Solar decks are easy to set up, does not require maintenance, are small enough not to spoil your house’s aesthetic but rather enhances it, and most of them come with rechargeable batteries so that you never run out of light during the night. The above ten devices are some of the best deck lights you will find in the market. Each one of these is unique in their way, but if there is not one thing that they have in common; it is their brilliant performance and consistency.

iThird’s 12 Pack Solar Deck Lights is the best of the best! It has 12 deck lights in a single pack, can be easily installed, and can work for as long as 12 hours a day!

Best Batteries For Solar Lights

Solar lights are a wonderful way to brighten up an outdoor space when you don’t have electrical outlets or don’t want to use them.

Solar lights are also ideal for camping because you don’t have to rely on mains hook up.

If you’re out in the sticks with no plugs, a good solar light can guide you from the tent to the loo!

Solar lights are able to work at night because they create and store energy during the day.

The sun’s UV rays are captured by the solar panels and converted into power. This power is stored in the battery that sits inside the solar light.

Without the battery, the light would only be able to work when it’s in direct sunlight. Which is rather pointless!

As you can see, the battery is quite an important part of the solar light.

You want to choose the best battery possible or you’ll find that your light flickers off just when you need it the most!

We’ve pulled together a list of the best rechargeable batteries for solar lights. We’ll discuss their strengths and weaknesses so that you can make the best choice.

We’ve also put together a buyer’s guide which will help you understand what to look for in a battery for a solar light.

Best Batteries For Solar Lights Reviews

1. Tenergy Solla Rechargeable NiMH AA Battery, 1000mAh Solar Batteries for Solar Garden Lights– Top Pick

These batteries are our top pick for several reasons. First and foremost, the sheer value. You get 24 batteries for under $20 which means that it’s less than a dollar per battery.

Now, we could be cynical and say that they’re low price because they’re low quality. However, that is simply not the case.

The batteries work for 2000 charges which gives them a lifespan of 5+ years! Imagine not having to run around changing batteries for 5 years! That’s bliss!

Suitable for all weathers, these batteries have anti-leak protection which means that overcharging on long sunny days is not a problem.

They also have fairly low self-discharge meaning they won’t run themselves down on cloudy days.

They come pre-charged so they’re ready to use out of the box. They’re also free from heavy metals like cadmium meaning they are greener than some other rechargeable batteries.

You can choose the size of the battery and the pack quantity on the product page. This is handy if you need both AA and AAA batteries and want to use the same brand.

The only downside we can see to these batteries is that they have a capacity of 1000mAh which is lower than a few competitors. That being said, 1000mAh is more than enough power to see you through the night.

Pros

  • NiMH batteries.
  • 5+ years lifespan.
  • 1000 mAh capacity.
  • Low self-discharge.
  • Excellent value for money.

Cons

  • Doesn’t do so well on cloudy days.

2. EBL AA Rechargeable Batteries for Solar Lights Replacement – Best NiCad Batteries

These are Amazon’s choice for rechargeable solar batteries and to be fair to them, they have some excellent reviews.

They have a large temperature range that allows them to work in temperatures between -4°F and 140°F. This is ideal for solar lights that spend all day in the sun.

Their capacity is fairly large at 1200mAh. It doesn’t touch the Energizer’s capacity but considering the price difference, we don’t mind. A pack of 20 costs less than 8 Energizer batteries.

The manufacturers claim that these batteries provided advanced anti-leakage because of their stainless steel shell.

Customers do tend to agree they are very pleased with the performance and longevity of these batteries.

The batteries come as a pack of 20 but within that pack, they are separated into fours and housed in plastic cases.

This is handy because it means you won’t have loose batteries rolling all over the place.

Pros

  • Great value.
  • High capacity batteries.
  • Lasts throughout the nights.
  • 3+ year lifespan.
  • Anti-leak.
  • Handy storage containers included.

Cons

  • NiCad batteries.

3. AAA Rechargeable Batteries 24 Pack, POWEROWL High Capacity Rechargeable –  Best Value

These are NiMH batteries that, according to the manufacturer, can be recharged over 1200 times. That would give you over 3 years of daily use in your solar lights which is pretty awesome!

One feature we really like is the temperature-controlled valve system. Both ends of the battery feature three large vents.

When the battery temperature reaches over 70°F the vents open and releases any internal gas.

This feature is wonderful for batteries that are going to spend their lives in the sunlight! It will help extend the life of the battery and prevent leakages that could damage your lights.

Another great feature is the low self-discharge. What this means is that the battery won’t use up its charge when it’s not in use.

According to the manufacturer, you could pick up one of their batteries after 3 years of non-use and it would still have 70% of its charge left.

Obviously, if you’re planning on using these in solar lights, they’re pretty much going to be used daily.

However, it’s good to know that on days when recharging is limited, the battery won’t waste what power it has.

You get 24 batteries in the pack which makes this a great value pack. You’ll be able to power a garden full of solar lights.

The batteries can operate in temperatures as low as -4°F and the vent technology means they’ll operate safely at high temperatures too.

Pros

  • Temperature activated vent system.
  • 24 batteries.
  • Low self-discharge.
  • 3-year lifespan.
  • Last all through the night.

Cons

  • AA option is much more expensive.

4. Energizer NH15BP-8 Rechargeable AA Batteries– Best Capacity

Energizer is one of the biggest names in the battery world. Their batteries promise unparalleled performance and longevity.

These batteries boast a capacity of 2300mAh which is much larger than most of the other batteries on this list.

This means that you have a larger store of energy and can run for longer without needing to recharge.

Another great thing about these batteries is that they are made from recycled batteries. Ok, it’s only 4% but that’s a massive improvement on 0%.

If you’re environmentally conscious, these batteries are a good choice.

The major issue with Energizer batteries is that they are just so dang expensive!

This pack contains 8 batteries but it’s almost as expensive as other packs containing 24 batteries!

If you can afford Energizer, there’s’ no doubt they’ll serve you well.

However, you may need to remortgage your home to fill your solar lights with these!

Pros

  • NiMH batteries.
  • Huge capacity.
  • Powers your lights throughout the night.
  • 1500 recharges.
  • 3+ years lifespan.

Cons

  • Very expensive.

5. GEILIENERGY NiMH AA 600mAh 1.2V Rechargeable Batteries – Runner Up

I suppose the first thing you notice about these batteries is the luminous green color! You definitely won’t lose them in a drawer somewhere!

In terms of performance, there are lots of happy customers who vouch for these batteries. They seem to perform well in solar light, providing constant and even power throughout the night.

The product description does suggest that you use all of the pre-charged power before recharging them. This is to prevent recharge memory from kicking in. This is an issue more commonly associated with NiCam batteries. You can read more about it below.

Charge memory is less than ideal for solar lights. However, most customers don’t seem to have noticed much of an issue with it. It could be that the seller is being over cautious.

These batteries can be recharged up to 1000 times giving them a lifespan of over 2 years with daily use. It’s a pretty solid lifespan and means that you can get on with life rather than running around the garden constantly replacing batteries.

Pros

  • NiMH batteries.
  • 2+ years lifespan.
  • Provide light throughout the night.
  • Up to 1000 recharges.
  • Choice of battery size and pack size.

Cons

  • Memory charge issues.

Best Batteries For Solar Lights Buyer’s Guide

The first thing you should know about batteries for solar lights is that they must be rechargeable. Non-rechargeable batteries won’t be able to receive or store power from the solar panels.

Once non-rechargeable batteries run out they are essentially dead weight in solar lights. You might as well have just bought a regular battery operated light.

Battery Sizes

Before you rush off to buy some batteries, make sure you know what size you need. You might scoff, but we’ve all done it. We’ve gone out and come back with the wrong size.

Generally, solar lights will use either AA or AAA batteries. If it’s a particularly large light, it may use C batteries, but this is uncommon.

If you do end up with the wrong size, you could theoretically still use them. This only really works if you buy AAA in place of AA batteries.

You can use balled up aluminum foil to fill the gap between the AAA battery and the negative terminal.

You need to be careful and make sure that the foil doesn’t touch the other battery and that you only place it on the negative terminal.

Battery Types

Not all batteries are the same, even if they’re the same size. You see, batteries are made from lots of different metals.

Here are the most common kinds:

  • Nickel-cadmium batteries – Often listed as NiCad, these batteries were the most widely used rechargeable batteries back in the day.

These batteries are pretty lightweight which makes them great for portable lights.

They don’t drop their voltage as they run out of power. This means your lights will shine just as bright with 20% of the power left as when they are fully charged.

The issue with these batteries is that you have to use them till they are dead before you recharge them.

These batteries tend to have memory charge issues.

This means that if you try to charge a battery on 40% the battery will remember that it only took 60% power to charge.

Next time you come to charge the battery it will only charge 60% before it thinks it’s full.

  • Nickel metal hybrid batteries – Usually listed as NiMH, these batteries are probably the best when it comes to solar-powered lights.

They don’t suffer from memory charge issues, they don’t drop their voltage, they are more eco friendly in terms of disposal, and they can generally hold more charge.

The only issue with these batteries is that they tend to have a shorter overall lifespan. To counteract that, they tend to be cheaper than other batteries.
  • Lithium-ion batteries – Abbreviated to Li-ion, these heavy-duty power cells have been around for decades. They’re not as popular as NiMH batteries in small devices because they’re quite expensive to produce.

They do have a much longer lifespan, no voltage drop, and a shorter recharge time. They are, in a way, the Prada of rechargeable batteries. Great if you can afford them, but not in everybody’s price range.
  • Lithium-phosphate batteries– Not so conveniently abbreviated to LiFeP04, these batteries do make excellent power sources for solar lights. However, they tend to only come in larger sizes.
  • Alkaline batteries– Alkaline batteries have been around for a long time and are fairly popular in the disposable market.

When it comes to rechargeable alkaline batteries, the main problem is that they don’t take well to deep discharges. That means if you use one till it’s flat, you’ll have a limited number of recharges left.

While alkaline batteries tend to be fairly cheap, they’re not typically suited to devices with a high drain. This is because of the deep discharge issue.

As such they’re less than ideal for solar lights which draw power for around 10 hours a day.

For solar lights, your best bet is NiMH batteries or Li-ion batteries if you can afford them. NiCad will do at a push, but you’re best off staying away from alkaline batteries.

Disposing of Batteries

Rechargeable batteries are not infinite. The materials within the battery degrade over time as it goes through more charging cycles.

These batteries have a fairly broad lifespan. In general, they last between 2-7 years depending on the kind of battery and its usage.

When rechargeable batteries reach the end of their lifespan, they stop holding a charge. You’ll notice that they don’t last through the night or don’t power on at all.

Rechargeable batteries are recyclable. When they’ve reached the end of their life with you, take them to a recycling point so that they can have a new life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace NiCam with NiMH batteries?

You can indeed! NiCam and NiMH batteries have the same voltage so you are more than welcome to replace them with each other.

What you should not do is use them together in the same appliance. They each have different discharge rates which can increase the risk of battery leakage.

NiCad batteries will discharge faster meaning they will be empty sooner.

The NiMH batteries will still be working and you might end up reversing the charge on the NiCam batteries.

It’s always best to use batteries as a pack. As in keep to the same type and the same age.

We’ve all done the thing where we hunt for a battery or pinch it from another device. That’s ok in the short term.

However, to get the most out of your batteries it’s best to replace the bunch instead of one at a time.

Is there a difference between solar batteries and normal rechargeable batteries?

Not really. You’ll see some batteries marketed as rechargeable solar batteries and they’ll claim to be designed for solar lights.

In reality, they are just NiMH batteries. Many solar lights used to be sold with NiCam batteries.

When NiMH batteries hit the scene some companies marketed them specifically as solar batteries because they were more appropriate for solar lights than NiCam batteries.

You don’t need to buy ‘solar’ batteries. Any rechargeable battery will do though NiCam batteries are better in terms of functionality.

Do solar lights need direct sunlight or just light?

Have you ever been to the beach or the park on a cloudy day and not bothered with sunblock.

When you get home you realize you’ve burnt even though you weren’t in direct sunlight!

Well, that happens because daylight is the real powerhouse when it comes to solar energy. Sunlight, as in the direct kind, is what makes us warm but daylight is what contains the photons necessary for solar power.

Direct sunlight will indeed charge your batteries quicker, but it’s not strictly necessary for charging.

On a cloudy or overcast day, your batteries will charge at about 40% of the speed of their charge on a sunny day.

If for whatever reason, you want to charge your solar light with another kind of light, you can. LED lights create enough UV light to charge a solar light.

It will take a fairly long time as they don’t produce a huge amount of UV light, but it can be done.

Best Solar Camping Lanterns Buyer’s Guide

There are several factors that you will need to consider when browsing through the selection of camping solar lanterns and normal solar lanterns. Considering the following criteria will aid you during the purchasing process so that you can select the best product for your needs.

The Type of Lantern

The market offers a range of solar lanterns so you can select your preferred option depending on how it is likely to be used. When camping you are likely to use the solar lantern when walking through your campsite and also to illuminate your living space. Some will be compressible with an appearance that closely resembles that of a balloon and as such, they are a great space-saving option. The other common styles of lanterns are traditional, fixed models that cannot be collapsed. They tend to feature a glass body that provides a larger volume of light for improved visibility.

The Weight

The weight of your lantern is going to determine how easy it is to transport. Although a larger lantern with a bright beam is appealing for charging multiple devices while illuminating the interior of your camping space, they can be difficult to transport around your campsite. A lighter and more compact option is going to be much easier to handle. The majority of lanterns come with handles that make them much easier to carry.

The Lighting Modes

Many solar lanterns will have multiple light modes from high to low along with an SOS option should you require it in an emergency. A broader selection of lighting modes makes the lantern more versatile and you can select the light mode depending on the task that you are completing.

The Brightness of the lumens

The lumens measure the brightness of the light output and this can differ between the lanterns. A lantern with around 60 to 100 lumens is likely to provide you with sufficient output. Again, it is going to depend on the setting where your solar lantern is going to be used. If you are going to be using the lantern inside your camping space or to complete particular tasks, 60 lumens are likely to provide you with a sufficient level of brightness.

Charging Capabilities

A great thing about many solar lanterns is that they can be used as a backup charging source. For example, you can charge your mobile phone if it is beginning to run low and you don’t have a charging port available. Likewise, the USB ports also allow you to charge other devices this way too.

The Charging Modes

You will find that most solar lanterns can be charged in multiple ways. Of course, most can be charged following exposure to solar energy and others can be charged using a USB. Many solar lanterns will also be equipped with batteries that are going to require replacement after being used for a prolonged period.

Lanterns that can be charged in multiple ways are more versatile. There are visual indicators that inform you when the lantern is charged. The amount of time that the lantern takes to charge is also likely to differ between the different models. Charging the lantern via an adapter is going to consume less time than solar energy. The specifications of the lantern will state the expected charge time.

The Material Construction

Your lantern should be made from tough materials that are tough and resistant to potential damage. The majority are made with an ABS plastic housing and a glass frame surrounding the LEDs. This lens will protect the LEDs from exposure to damage. The handles are typically made from steel which is strong and easier to grip.

The Durability

The durability of your lantern is important in determining how long it is going to last. The lantern should be constructed with robust materials that can resist damage. It should also be waterproof with the ability to endure different weather conditions.

The Price

Solar Lanterns are a pretty affordable purchase with the majority retailing below $20. They are cost-effective with multiple features that illuminate the area ahead of you and allow you to charge other devices too. The price of the lantern will often be reflected in the functionality and build quality. They are some inexpensively priced lanterns that work just as well as those that are more expensive aswell.

The Warranty

Some solar lanterns will be covered by a warranty that protects you should you experience any issues with the product that you receive. The length of the warranty is likely to differ between brands with some offering a longer warranty than others.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do solar lanterns last?

You should expect the batteries inside a solar lantern to last for approximately 3-4 years before requiring replacement. The LEDs tend to have a pretty generous lifespan lasting for an average of 10 years. The lantern will provide visual indicators when these components require replacement, the most obvious being a dimmer beam of light.

How many lumens do I need inside my camping lantern?

The lumens of a lantern can vary rather significantly and this allows you to select the best brightness. The lumens required depends on how the lantern is going to be used. The majority will have around 150 to 350 lumens, although a camping lantern with around 100 lumens is likely to be effective.

How to Choose Solar Dock Lights

The best solar dock lighting will have the right aesthetics. It will give your dock security, feature great lighting, be waterproof, and be durable. If solar dock lights have these five features, they might be the right ones for your dock!

Aesthetics

Find lights that fit your dock needs and look gorgeous when the sun goes down. See this as an example (source). Even if the lights are durable, if they don’t look good on your dock, they aren’t worth the price point. Consider how slight variations in the color of lighting will look on your dock. Buy lights that will make the place look nice. Cheap-looking light fixtures and lighting are worse than no lighting at all!

The Jackyled lights have four different color options, the basic white, and blue, green, and yellow. If you already have solar lighting on your property, then the color options can help distinguish your dock. The Kasun lights have a nice, dimmer white color. The Aootek is more a spotlight or security light than an ambient glow. The Siedinlar lights have a lovely 360-degree white glow.

Price

Quality solar dock lights come at a quality cost. Jackyled and Siedinlar lights run about 10 dollars a pop. Kasun is about half that much, and Aootek can be 15 to 20 dollars per light. Obviously, the Aootek has the biggest lighting range, and the Kasun gives you the most lights for your dollar. If you need a lot of space covered, the cheaper lights will get you there quicker. But if you need a lot of light in a little space, the Aootek is very reasonable for all of its other perks.

Security

Look for solar dock lights that add some security and visibility to your dock. If that’s the case, the Aootek is your best option, with motion-sensing tech and the brightest, widest angle. The Siedinlar also offers a great security option. It also has a reasonable price for a 360-degree shine.

Lighting and Light-modes

The best dock lighting depends on what you want to do with it. Aootek offers security and visibility. It is the only light on this list that has motion sensing technology. Jackyled’s color options give you a choice between blue or green lights to distinguish your dock from the rest of the property.

Waterproof and Water-resistance

Dock lights will sometimes be exposed to water. So waterproof and water-resistant construction is a great choice. Most solar lights aren’t meant to be submerged. So lights that can withstand heavy rain and waves washing over the dock are perfect. All lights on this list are technically specified as waterproof.

The Aootek and Kasun are the least waterproof of the bunch, ready for the rain but not so many waves. The Siedinlar can take heavy water, but the Jackyled are the best for water resistance. If you want to tag lights onto the posts of the dock, those are your best bet.

Durability

You don’t want to replace your lights. You want to set them up and walk away. Kasun and Siedinlar have replaceable rechargeable batteries, so the death of the battery power doesn’t mean you have to invest in new dock lights. Unfortunately, the Jackyled’s tight waterproof construction means you can’t easily get at the battery to replace it.

The Siedinlar has a 1-year warranty included with the product, making them the most durable and replaceable option.

How to Choose the Best Commercial Parking Lot Solar Lighting

In our automobile-centric society parking lots are almost a requirement for any business. As an owner and/or operator, safety is one of your responsibilities. We will discuss the considerations you should make when choosing the best commercial parking lot solar lighting for your business.

Commercial solar lighting is a large initial investment but will pay itself off in the long term with years of “free” energy from the sun. You can purchase an all-in-one solar lighting pole light or the panels and lights separately. We will focus here on the simple utility of all-in-one commercial LED parking lot lights.

Top Recommendation

HXXY 100W LED Solar Street Light

The 100 watts LED solar street lamps will produce a maximum of 11,000 lumens, making them one of the brightest solar lights I could find.

A massive 120W mono-crystalline silicon solar panel should charge the equally massive 54,000kWh lithium-ion battery. The light should fully charge within 10 hours of direct sunlight.

Power saving PIR activated bi-level light outputs conserve precious power when no one is around and can last up to 5 rainy days on conservative settings.

These lights are easily the most powerful on the list, but they come at a steep price. These lights are recommended for security applications and large commercial lots that don’t have access to main grid power.

Value Option

Alpha 1080X 10W 1300 Lumen Solar LED Post Light

These produce a maximum of 130lm/W making them the most efficient at full brightness. Three lighting modes allow you to operate the light dawn to dusk, PIR activated dim to bright, and PIR activated off to bright.

The battery is replaceable and will charge in 8 hours of full sun. The light can only run about two hours at full brightness, so it is best used in one of the PIR sensor modes, allowing bi-level outputs to save energy.

The light angle can be adjusted to align the panel with the sun better, optimizing charge and run times. This light is best for smaller parking lots or corners of your lot; other lighting options won’t reach.

How to Choose the Best Solar Parking Lights

When choosing lights for your solar parking lot, there are certain things to look for. Efficiency, efficacy, lighting power density, light distribution, color qualities, light layout, and desired results should be carefully considered to achieve the best results. You can keep it simple with all-in-one units or go all out with a solar canopy.

Most municipalities have requirements in place guiding the use of parking lot lights. Height, timing, brightness, and excessive light must all be controlled following these regulations. This guide will help sort through some of these issues, hopefully, in turn, making your purchase a little easier.

Mounting Styles

LED pole light fixtures are the most common way to light a parking lot surface, but floodlights are also an option. Floodlights can be very bright and are usually mounted on walls, poles, or landscaping, allowing them to be functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time. The number of pole or floodlights you need will be determined by how high they are placed, how bright they are, and the area’s size being lit.

PIR Motion Sensor

A passive infrared sensor(PIR) is included on many solar parking lot lights to conserve battery life. All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit infrared radiation from heat energy. These sensors work by measuring this infrared light allowing the sensor to detect movement.

HID Lights

Traditionally most parking lots were lit with high-intensity discharge(HID) lights. The HID metal halide lamps commonly used consist of an arc tube(burner), outer envelope(bulb), and a starting gas. The ballast supplies the ceramic or quartz arc tube with a voltage, which begins ionizing the gas(usually argon, mercury, and metal halide salts).

As temperature and pressure increase within the bulb, materials in the arc tube vaporize, emitting light and UV radiation. These lights are very bright but must be replaced every few years and are energy inefficient. These are not a viable solar option.

LED Lights

Light-emitting diodes(LEDs) use tiny microchips to produce visible light in the diode. This light production method is very efficient, and the “bulbs” don’t burn out like conventional light fixtures. LEDs instead of experience lumen degradation, slowly dimming over time.

However, this is a prolonged process, and you wouldn’t need to replace your LEDs for many years after installation. The Lighting Energy Efficiency in Parking(LEEP) organization has several case studies highlighting the energy-saving benefits of LEDs.

Luminaire

In technical terms, a luminaire is a complete lighting unit consisting of a lamp or lamps together with the parts designed to distribute the light, position and protect the lamps, and connect the lamps to the power supply.

The Federal Energy Management Program(FEMP) created a guide to be used by federal agencies when installing parking lot luminaires.

This guide is a useful resource in determining the best solutions for your parking lot lighting.

Luminaire Efficacy

A luminaires efficacy rating, LER, is measured in lumens per watt(lm/w). This rating is crucial as it will show you how much light is generated compared to the energy consumed. It is merely total light output(lumens) divided by input power(watts). High lumen solar lights are not always the best, and you should pay attention to how well the luminaire focuses its light.

Creating a Plan

Figuring out which luminaires you want to replace, noting height, and general light information will make things easier when choosing new lights. Consider the quality and quantity of lights you may need; different facilities have different lighting requirements. Lighting should be uniform across your entire lot as high contrast levels can obscure surveillance footage and can cause blind spots for vehicles and pedestrians.

Keep this in mind as you may need to install more lights when purchasing less powerful but more efficient models. Use lighting controls like bi-level outputs and fixed response switches to turn off specific luminaires during off-peak periods. This will conserve energy allowing you to run your solar lights longer.

Illumination Levels

The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America(IES) has recommended light levels to check out for different lighting applications. Recommended amounts are prescribed in footcandles(FC), which are the primary measurement for light falling on a surface. Measurements can be taken with a handheld light detector. A 4:1 (bright/dark) ratio between the brightest and darkest areas is considered a suitable minimum, but a 3:1 ratio is better.

Footcandles matter more than lumens when considering parking lot lights as they tell you how much illumination the parking surface is receiving. Color temperature, measured in degrees kelvin, is also essential to consider. Depending on what material your lot is made of, color temperature will affect how the light appears on the parking surface.

Solar and Battery Storage

Solar parking lot lights use the sun’s energy, collected by photovoltaic cells, to store electricity in a battery, which is later used for your lighting needs. Look for a solar panel and battery combination that offers a large milliampere-hour(mAh) capacity.

Check the ratio between the solar panel and battery while looking at luminaire energy draw. Ensure the panel is sufficient to charge the battery and the battery has enough capacity to run the light for multiple hours.

The 32W solar panel supplies enough energy to charge the 39,000mAh battery. It also has remote control capabilities allowing you to choose between several lighting options, including auto On/Off, gradient, full brightness, half brightness, and timing modes of three, five, and eight hours, from up to 25 feet away. The light is rated IP67, so you shouldn’t have to worry about any weather-related failures for a long time.

The light also has a five-year warranty, so even if something does decide to go wrong, you are covered. This light is the most versatile option and would be suitable for medium-sized lots. It is effective at lighting vertical and horizontal surfaces and highlighting landscaping or signage you may have.

Pros
  • Extremely bright 10,000 lumen output
  • Large capacity 39,000 mAh battery
  • 16.5 foot connecting wire allowing independent solar panel placement
  • Remote control function up to 25 feet
  • IP 67 water and dust proof
Cons
  • Only generates 50 lm/W
  • Not as aesthetically pleasing
  • No PIR motion sensor

HXXY 100W LED Solar Street Light

This solar-powered street or parking lot lamp is the most powerful light I considered by multiple metrics. Unfortunately, it is also the most expensive. The light consists of 12V 100W Bridgelux LEDs, which can produce 11,000 lumens at maximum brightness. It comes with an affixed 18V 120W SunPower solar panel that will soak up the sun.

The panel is used to charge the large 54,000 mAh battery and, when fully charged, can provide up to 5 rainy days worth of light. An included battery cooling device will help to avoid equipment damage from overheating.

The integrated PIR sensor detects movement up to 164 feet away, changing the light to maximum brightness for incoming customers. Three lighting modes allow the light to conserve energy when no one is around. You will need a sturdy 3” pole to affix the light to as it weighs just over 66 pounds.

The fixture is IP65 water and dustproof and comes with a three-year warranty if something goes wrong. The light has a recommended hanging height of around 30 feet. This light is the right choice for large commercial parking lots that may not access grid power. It can also be used for higher security applications.

Pros
  • Huge 18V 120W solar panel
  • Large 54,000 mAh battery
  • Stainless steel finish
  • Large PIR sensor range
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Expensive
  • Unadjustable solar panel

Alpha 1080X 10W 1,300 Lumen Solar LED Post Light

This lightweight solar post light outputs 1,300 lumens at full power. It may not be bright enough for all of your needs but can cover dark corners your other lights don’t reach. It has three lighting modes: full brightness, PIR sensor activated dim/bright, or dark/bright. The PIR sensors dim the light after no movement is detected for about 30 seconds.

Before using your light, the company recommends letting the light charge for eight hours in direct sunlight. This is something you should do with all your lights. If you have runtime problems, you can turn the light off for three days to allow a full charge of the battery. If the battery stops functioning properly, you can always replace it.

The lights have a recommended hanging height of 10-13 feet with a distance of 20-26 feet between poles The angle of placement is adjustable with a lock nut mount allowing you to fine-tune solar panel alignment. This light can be useful for smaller parking lots and are budget-friendly.

Pros
  • Great value
  • Three lighting modes with PIR sensor
  • Replaceable battery
  • Adjustable angle mount
Cons
  • Short runtime on full brightness
  • May not be bright enough for all applications

Final Thoughts About Choosing a Solar Parking Lot Lighting

Choosing parking lot lighting for your business might not be the most thrilling task you must undertake as a business owner or manager, but it is nonetheless essential. Lighting provides safety and security to guests, helping deter vandals and thieves from skulking in the shadows.

I also recommend you light the vertical surfaces in your lot, which can add definition to your building’s outdoor appearance. After carefully considering several lights, I think the LEDMO 200W solar flood lamp is a great option to use in your solar-powered parking lot.

It can be mounted in almost any way you want, making it the most versatile option. The 16.5 foot connecting cable allows independent placement of the solar panel while the remote allows you to access lighting controls from a distance. It is 10,000 lumens, which quickly makes it the brightest on the list, and should work for most business applications.

The large capacity 39,000 mAh hour battery and 32W solar panel should keep the light running throughout the night, providing a safe space for your customers. It may be best to purchase a single light at first so you can analyze how effectively it will fulfill your needs.

With lighting alone accounting for a large portion of a business’s budget, anything that can reduce cost in the long term should be considered. Adding solar-powered lights to your parking lot may be the ticket to reduced running costs.

Things to Consider When Buying Solar Powered Tiki Torches

Give a new lease of life to your outdoors with the solar-powered tiki torches. You do need to remember that not all of them are created equal. They are available in various designs and styles, and you need to choose as per your specific needs and requirements. Here are some things you should consider before you buy.

Light Source

The first thing that you should consider is how the tiki torch provides light. The traditional torches use a flame to illuminate the outdoors. The fire focused torches are available in the market, but the solar torches offer a safe alternative.

The solar-powered tiki torches don’t pose a danger even when children and pets are around. Solar torches look similar to flame torches but don’t pose a safety risk. The LED bulbs provide a warm glow from dusk to dawn.

Design and Material

The traditional tiki torches are available in bamboo. Bamboo torches are the most affordable. You do need to remember that torches made of bamboo material don’t last long. Tiki torches made from metal last a long time.

The new solar-powered tiki torches are available in different types of material. Iron, brass, stainless steel, and copper are other materials that the tiki torches are available. Many manufacturers have also incorporated elements of ceramic, resin, and glass in the tiki torch design.

Pole or Tabletop

One of the essential things you need to decide is whether you want a standard pole torch or a tabletop torch. Pole torches are available with a rod, and this can be staked to the ground.

The pole torches are available in different lengths. Additional accessories are provided by manufacturers to increase the length of the pole. The metal pole torches are strong and last a long time.

Brightness

The flame’s brightness is another essential factor that you need to consider when buying solar-powered tiki torches. If you choose solar lights with a low lumen, you will only get low brightness. The soft light will be inadequate to light up your outdoors.

Choose LED lights with a high lumen rate so that you get adequate brightness to light up your yard, patio, and pathway. Lumen rate is the brightness that LED lights to provide. If the flickering flame solar light has a high lumen rate, it will provide bright light for your outdoors.

Battery Capacity

The capacity of the battery is something that you need to pay attention to. It is best to choose a 2200mAh battery to power the solar light for at least 10 hours in summer. A battery with a larger capacity will be able to light up your outdoors longer.

They are great for anywhere on a deck or in the backyard but they look particularly great around the pool because of the reflection of the dancing flame in the water at night.

Best Solar Flagpole Lights: LED, In Ground, Kits + Options

Knowing what the best solar flagpole lights are is a good thing to know even if you don’t yet have your flag up. If you are looking for the best and reasonably priced option, you should go with Sunnytech’s 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light.

This is my top recommendation because it is easy to install and lightweight. It is also durable and long-lasting that you would just enjoy it lighting up your flag.

The Top Recommendation

Sunnytech 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light

The Sunnytech’s 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light can take as little as 5 minutes to install. Thanks to its really simple and comprehensive design and the fact that there are very few pieces to it.

It works well enough to light up your flag all night most of the time. Even after a cloudy day when the six small solar panels that are on top have not gotten much sunlight.

Sunnytech 2nd Generation Solar Flag Pole 20led Light, Brightest, Most Powerful and Stable, Longest Lasting & Most Flag Coverage, LED Downlight for Most 15 to 25 Ft In-Ground Flag Pole, Automatic,Black

The Upgrade Option

PolePalUSA Double Row Solar Flagpole Top Light

The PolePalUSA Double Row Solar Flagpole Top Lights made my list since this one has two rows of lights that can light up the flag all night long.

This means that whether blowing out to the side in the wind or lying flat against the pole your flag is in the light.

This bonus feature does come with a price tag on it. If you are willing to pay an expensive price, then it can be well worth it to really bring out your flag.

PolePalUSA Double Row Solar Flagpole Top Light

The Value Option

PISSION American Flag Pole Light

The PISSION American Flag Pole Light has made my list since it has a few extras to it and yet it still manages to be the cheapest one here.

It has some additional lights aside from the twenty that form around the flag. While these added lights don’t form a full second circle, they do ensure that your flag is well lit.

The second thing is it’s unique. The optional attachment allowing the lights to be used for other things.

The Alternative Option

DBF Solar Lights Outdoor

The DBF Solar Lights Outdoor is the last thing on my list, but it certainly deserves to be here. Thanks to its versatility.

Like a spotlight, it has two different light settings you can use. It also gives you the handy option of either sticking it in the ground or mounting it on the side of a wall.

This is great if your flagpole is near a building. Also, it can save you the trouble of getting to the top of your flagpole to check on it if it is acting up.

Why Should You Consider Getting A Solar Flagpole Light

Firstly of all, seeing a flag lit up at night looks patriotic and is more eye-catching than even a flag flying in the day time. This eye-catching ability can also affect businesses by first catching people’s attention it thereby attracting more customers who might otherwise have not even noticed that the business was there (Source).

Firstly, one good reason why you should get solar lights for flagpoles is the fact that having good lighting is an actual necessity if you want to keep your flag up all night. There are codes and regulations that must be followed when displaying a flag and it is literally against the law to let your flag stay up all night without lighting (Source).

While the “ceremony” for raising and lowering a flag is simple, I think that having to do it every day can get a little tedious, making getting solar flagpole lighting a good option. However, in order to take advantage of this, you have to have a special all-weather flag. Most nylon flags work fine but screen-printed flags fade and fray rather quickly if left up for long periods of time, so try to find out what kind of flag you have.

What Kind Of Light And Why Solar

Flagpole lights that use LED bulbs are by far easier to find and tend to be more popular, because of this you will find them easier to get. While that might be reason enough to go with LED lights, there are plenty of other reasons among which are the facts that LED lights last much longer and are much more efficient.

An LED flagpole light also takes far less electricity, saving your money on you bill, but paired with a solar set-up it doesn’t cost you any electricity. Installing wired lights in city limits can often require permits, not to mention equipment, and having to hire a licensed electrician. Solar lights are rarely affected by the same rules and can be installed sometimes without needing any tools at all (Source).

Flagpole Lighting Options

There are a few different options you can go with for your solar-powered pole light. A solar spotlight or a floodlight can be used to shine up at your flag from the ground, but to use this method it requires at least two or three spotlights depending on the height of your pole and the size of your flag (Source).

While spotlights do show off any shrubs you might have growing near your pole, this option works best if there are no trees or anything growing near the flagpole and plenty of space around the base to not only put the lights but their solar panels as well. These also require extra time during lawn maintenance to mow around them and to deal with any weeds that grow near them.

A solar top light goes on top of the flag pole right under the flag pole topper and shines down onto your flag. This can be convenient when it comes time to mow since there is nothing on the ground that needs to be moved aside. While the light does not reach all the way to the ground in most cases, it is very good at showcasing your flag.

Another option is one that attaches to your pole and shines up onto your flag like a spotlight. While this has some of the advantages of a solar top light, if you put it too low there is the risk of hitting it in passing. And there is also still the fact that snow can fall on the light and cover it or rain can make it dimmer.

Troubleshooting Solar Lights

Of course, solar lights have problems sometimes, but there are a few common ones that are easy to solve. Coming on but then going off sooner than usual, especially if this seems to happen more and more, is usually either due to the batteries aging or the solar panel not absorbing enough light to charge the batteries.

Giving your solar panel a good cleaning will help it to absorb more sunlight, and replacing the old batteries with new ones should make your solar powered flagpole light as good as new. Replacing the battery is also a good thing to try if your light is not coming on at all. If that does not fix the problem then it might be fuse-related (Source).

Quick Take: OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR Solar Flagpole Light

Sunnytech 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light

Sunnytech 2nd Generation Solar Flag Pole 20led Light, Brightest, Most Powerful and Stable, Longest Lasting & Most Flag Coverage, LED Downlight for Most 15 to 25 Ft In-Ground Flag Pole, Automatic,Black

Made of Eco-friendly and flame-retardant plastic, this option has 20 LED lights and weighs just over one pound. It fits most 15’-25’ flagpoles that have a ½” rod at the top and has six small solar panels in a circle that absorbs the sunlight during the day.

It automatically goes on when the sun goes down and off at dawn, often lasting the whole time in between even when cloudy and rainy weather prevents it from getting a full day of sun. These solar pole lights have been known to last three years or more.

Pros
  • It is easy to install, needing no extra tools besides the ones you might need to get to the top of your pole, and can be added in as short a time as 5 minutes.
  • checkThe three batteries are visible and easy to get to on the underneath which is very helpful for when they need to be replaced.
Cons
  • You might need to buy a new flagpole ornament if the shaft is too short to pass through the hole, and it does not include one with the flag pole light kits.
  • The lack of a wide range means that the light won’t reach the end of the flag when the wind is blowing.

PolePalUSA Double Row Solar Flagpole Top Light

PolePalUSA Double Row Solar Flagpole Top Light This option for lighting up your flag has a total of 32 LED lights set in two separate rows, some pointing almost straight down and some at a 45-degree angle in order to shed light on your flag even as is blows in the breeze. The most expensive option on my list today, it works on telescoping poles of almost any size, even up to 45’, and continues working well even in windy conditions.
Pros
  • Easy to cut design. The warranty is also unaffected when you cut the solar cover to perfectly fit your pool.
  • Diamond-shaped air pockets give you more heating per square inch than other types of solar covers.
Cons
  • The batteries are not visible and are slightly hard to get to when they need to be replaced.
  • banIt is very expensive to buy.

PISSION American Flag Pole Light

PISSION Flag Pole Lights Solar Powered, American Flag Pole Light Weatherproof Auto ON/Off Night Light Downlight for 15 to 25ft Flag Pole Pission’s option for lighting a flag is the cheapest one on my list and has a circle of 20 lights with three groups of two smaller lights inside that. Designed to give about 10 hours of light as long as it has at least 8 hours of sun, it may not last until morning but will last most of the night. It weighs just less than a pound and comes with an attachment that enables you to use this light for other things besides putting it on the top of your flag pole. This can be a good thing to have available should you decide for whatever reason that you don’t want it above your flag anymore, since it wouldn’t be a complete waste.
Cons
  • It is not as durable and doesn’t last as long, sometimes having problems within a few months.
  • banIt is not as weather-proof, meaning that bad storms stand a chance of getting water inside it and damaging it.
Pros
  • checkIt is easy to install with the batteries being visible on the underneath for ease of access.
  • checkThe attachment makes it possible to use this solar light on camping trips, clipping it to a rope or something at night so that is shines light in your tent or over your picnic table, giving you hours longer of camping fun.

DBF Solar Lights Outdoor

DBF Solar Lights Outdoor, Upgraded 18 LED Waterproof Solar Spotlights Solar Landscape Lights Adjustable Auto On/Off Wall Security Lighting for Garden Yard Pathway Driveway Pool, Pack of 2 (Cool White) My last option is a solar flag spotlight that shines up at your flag from the ground. It comes most often in a pack of two, which is good because you need at least two spotlights for your flag. The battery lifespan is around 2 years and it shines better on shorter poles that the light can reach easier. Two brightness modes and the fact that these can be wall-mounted, gives you options, especially if your flag is near a building or wall. It can be angled upward at almost any angle to highlight your flag and can highlight your landscaping too.
Pros
  • checkThe solar panel is attached to the spotlight, meaning that there are no cords or anything to worry about.
  • checkIt can move 120 degrees so you can point it wherever you want, and if you later decide to get rid of your flag you can use it to highlight your landscaping.
Cons
  • You will have to watch where you mow if you put it on the ground, and you will also have to make sure that it is not shaded by trees or anything that will prevent it from getting enough sunlight.
  • banIf attaching it to the side of a building the adhesive can damage the paint if you try to remove it.

Conclusion

Each of the in-ground flagpole lighting options that I told you about our amazing options. But my favorite would be the Sunnytech 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light. Its solar-powered LED lights can shine all night long without any problems. At the same time, it is quite reasonably priced.

Since it is a top light and never in the way, it is a huge plus in my opinion. Especially since I sometimes forget to move things on the ground before mowing. And the batteries are one of the main reasons why a solar light eventually wears out. Having batteries that are handy is definitely a feature I like about it.
