Things to consider before choosing solar-powered water features

· Performance

Since these water features are powered by small solar panels, their performance is affected by the intensity of sunlight. The pump performance is directly related to the amount of strength of sunlight received in your garden or backyard. Full direct sunlight offers maximum performance while partial sunlight provides reduced performance. On the other hand, a cloudy or shady environment offers minimal to low flow and the water feature will not run at night. However, your fountain will be ready to run the next day as soon as the sun directly shines on the solar panel. Solar-powered water features are more suited for summer days. Performance is also affected by when a solar panel or water inlet gets blocked or dirty.

If you want water-feature to work at night time as well as winters, look for the ones like Sunnydaze Solar Water Fountain and Smart Solar 20326R01 Umbrella Solar Fountain that have an internal backup battery for overcast days. The backup battery also aids in illuminating the integrated LED lights during the night. If you don’t want your fountain to work all day long, a water feature with no battery backup won’t be an issue for you.

· Materials

Known for creating spectacular visual display and a calming environment in the garden, water features come in a variety of different styles and designs ranging from traditional to modern. A natural-looking garden ornament not only merges perfectly with flowers and plants, but it also attracts wildlife.

1. Stainless steel

Constructed from granite lumps, slate, marble, polystone, or hardwearing rocks, they appear more natural. Their rugged appearance blends in with the garden quite well. Some also have built-in LED lights.

3. Polyresin

Water features construction from polyresin offers a realistic rock effect. As polyresin can mold into different shapes, styles, and textures, these water features come in various designs. Polyresin water features are most lightweight as opposed to rock or steel counterparts. Besides, they are also available at a much lower price than the expensive and heavy carved-rock water features.

4. Resin and fiberglass

These water features use lightweight flexible fiberglass properties with a hard resin. One layer of fiberglass combines with 2 layers of resin material to make any shape and paint your desired color.

5. Metal

Metal water features are another great option for both modern and traditional outdoor spaces. They are durable and sturdy but some cheap metal features are prone to corrosion.

6. Ceramic

Water features made of ceramic are mostly hand-crafted from clay ceramic and then glazed for a smooth finish. They are easy to clean and maintain. However, ceramic water features tend to break if accidentally dropped or tipped over.

· Freezing and Frost damage

Solar-powered water features are designed for the outdoor garden. So, they must be made out of durable material to resist all weather conditions. Freezing temperatures can cause damage to the water feature so before the temperature falls below 4 ̊C; you must store the unit in a dry place like the garage or shed during the winter season. Move your water feature indoors in the winter to prevent it from cracking or freezing. It’s best to choose a water feature made of weather-proof material like polyresin that’s both frost and UV resistant to prevent damage.

· Sound

Sound is another important consideration to look at when choosing a water feature. It must produce the same noise intensity and ambient sound effect that you want. The sound differs from one model to another with varying power capacity and size. If you prefer the soothing bubbling stream sound, then opt for a water feature that creates a bubbling water stream. For bubble bath tone or rain trickling relaxing effect, choose the water feature carefully.

Types of water features

Various solar-powered water features include:

· Fountains

This makes installation easy and simple as you don’t require a constant water supply connection. Since water is reused, the self-contained water feature requires little or low maintenance and low operating expenses.

Is a remote solar panel a better choice?

The benefit of a remote solar panel with a long cable allows you to place water-feature in the shade while the solar panel under direct sunlight. You get the freedom to install a water feature and solar panel at your desired location.

Those water features that have an integrated solar panel need to be placed under sunlight for maximum performance. Keeping it under shade mix greatly reduces fountain performance.

What is dry run protection technology?

As the name suggests, the dry run protection technology protects the pump when the water feature runs dry. This built-in protection feature prevents overheating of the motor and breakage of the pump due to component wear. If the static water level is too low, it automatically stops the motor. The pump automatically resumes operation after an optimal water level.

Things to Consider When Buying Solar Powered Tiki Torches

Give a new lease of life to your outdoors with the solar-powered tiki torches. You do need to remember that not all of them are created equal. They are available in various designs and styles, and you need to choose as per your specific needs and requirements. Here are some things you should consider before you buy.

Light Source

The first thing that you should consider is how the tiki torch provides light. The traditional torches use a flame to illuminate the outdoors. The fire focused torches are available in the market, but the solar torches offer a safe alternative.

The solar-powered tiki torches don’t pose a danger even when children and pets are around. Solar torches look similar to flame torches but don’t pose a safety risk. The LED bulbs provide a warm glow from dusk to dawn.

Design and Material

The traditional tiki torches are available in bamboo. Bamboo torches are the most affordable. You do need to remember that torches made of bamboo material don’t last long. Tiki torches made from metal last a long time.

The new solar-powered tiki torches are available in different types of material. Iron, brass, stainless steel, and copper are other materials that the tiki torches are available. Many manufacturers have also incorporated elements of ceramic, resin, and glass in the tiki torch design.

Pole or Tabletop

One of the essential things you need to decide is whether you want a standard pole torch or a tabletop torch. Pole torches are available with a rod, and this can be staked to the ground.

The pole torches are available in different lengths. Additional accessories are provided by manufacturers to increase the length of the pole. The metal pole torches are strong and last a long time.

Brightness

The flame’s brightness is another essential factor that you need to consider when buying solar-powered tiki torches. If you choose solar lights with a low lumen, you will only get low brightness. The soft light will be inadequate to light up your outdoors.

Choose LED lights with a high lumen rate so that you get adequate brightness to light up your yard, patio, and pathway. Lumen rate is the brightness that LED lights to provide. If the flickering flame solar light has a high lumen rate, it will provide bright light for your outdoors.

Battery Capacity

The capacity of the battery is something that you need to pay attention to. It is best to choose a 2200mAh battery to power the solar light for at least 10 hours in summer. A battery with a larger capacity will be able to light up your outdoors longer.

They are great for anywhere on a deck or in the backyard but they look particularly great around the pool because of the reflection of the dancing flame in the water at night.

Best Solar Flagpole Lights: LED, In Ground, Kits + Options

Knowing what the best solar flagpole lights are is a good thing to know even if you don’t yet have your flag up. If you are looking for the best and reasonably priced option, you should go with Sunnytech’s 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light.

This is my top recommendation because it is easy to install and lightweight. It is also durable and long-lasting that you would just enjoy it lighting up your flag.

The Top Recommendation

Sunnytech 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light

The Sunnytech’s 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light can take as little as 5 minutes to install. Thanks to its really simple and comprehensive design and the fact that there are very few pieces to it.

It works well enough to light up your flag all night most of the time. Even after a cloudy day when the six small solar panels that are on top have not gotten much sunlight.

The Upgrade Option

PolePalUSA Double Row Solar Flagpole Top Light

The PolePalUSA Double Row Solar Flagpole Top Lights made my list since this one has two rows of lights that can light up the flag all night long.

This means that whether blowing out to the side in the wind or lying flat against the pole your flag is in the light.

This bonus feature does come with a price tag on it. If you are willing to pay an expensive price, then it can be well worth it to really bring out your flag.

The Value Option

PISSION American Flag Pole Light

The PISSION American Flag Pole Light has made my list since it has a few extras to it and yet it still manages to be the cheapest one here.

It has some additional lights aside from the twenty that form around the flag. While these added lights don’t form a full second circle, they do ensure that your flag is well lit.

The second thing is it’s unique. The optional attachment allowing the lights to be used for other things.

The Alternative Option

DBF Solar Lights Outdoor

The DBF Solar Lights Outdoor is the last thing on my list, but it certainly deserves to be here. Thanks to its versatility.

Like a spotlight, it has two different light settings you can use. It also gives you the handy option of either sticking it in the ground or mounting it on the side of a wall.

This is great if your flagpole is near a building. Also, it can save you the trouble of getting to the top of your flagpole to check on it if it is acting up.

Why Should You Consider Getting A Solar Flagpole Light

Firstly of all, seeing a flag lit up at night looks patriotic and is more eye-catching than even a flag flying in the day time. This eye-catching ability can also affect businesses by first catching people’s attention it thereby attracting more customers who might otherwise have not even noticed that the business was there (Source).

Firstly, one good reason why you should get solar lights for flagpoles is the fact that having good lighting is an actual necessity if you want to keep your flag up all night. There are codes and regulations that must be followed when displaying a flag and it is literally against the law to let your flag stay up all night without lighting (Source).

While the “ceremony” for raising and lowering a flag is simple, I think that having to do it every day can get a little tedious, making getting solar flagpole lighting a good option. However, in order to take advantage of this, you have to have a special all-weather flag. Most nylon flags work fine but screen-printed flags fade and fray rather quickly if left up for long periods of time, so try to find out what kind of flag you have.

What Kind Of Light And Why Solar

Flagpole lights that use LED bulbs are by far easier to find and tend to be more popular, because of this you will find them easier to get. While that might be reason enough to go with LED lights, there are plenty of other reasons among which are the facts that LED lights last much longer and are much more efficient.

An LED flagpole light also takes far less electricity, saving your money on you bill, but paired with a solar set-up it doesn’t cost you any electricity. Installing wired lights in city limits can often require permits, not to mention equipment, and having to hire a licensed electrician. Solar lights are rarely affected by the same rules and can be installed sometimes without needing any tools at all (Source).

Flagpole Lighting Options

There are a few different options you can go with for your solar-powered pole light. A solar spotlight or a floodlight can be used to shine up at your flag from the ground, but to use this method it requires at least two or three spotlights depending on the height of your pole and the size of your flag (Source).

While spotlights do show off any shrubs you might have growing near your pole, this option works best if there are no trees or anything growing near the flagpole and plenty of space around the base to not only put the lights but their solar panels as well. These also require extra time during lawn maintenance to mow around them and to deal with any weeds that grow near them.

A solar top light goes on top of the flag pole right under the flag pole topper and shines down onto your flag. This can be convenient when it comes time to mow since there is nothing on the ground that needs to be moved aside. While the light does not reach all the way to the ground in most cases, it is very good at showcasing your flag.

Another option is one that attaches to your pole and shines up onto your flag like a spotlight. While this has some of the advantages of a solar top light, if you put it too low there is the risk of hitting it in passing. And there is also still the fact that snow can fall on the light and cover it or rain can make it dimmer.

Troubleshooting Solar Lights

Of course, solar lights have problems sometimes, but there are a few common ones that are easy to solve. Coming on but then going off sooner than usual, especially if this seems to happen more and more, is usually either due to the batteries aging or the solar panel not absorbing enough light to charge the batteries.

Giving your solar panel a good cleaning will help it to absorb more sunlight, and replacing the old batteries with new ones should make your solar powered flagpole light as good as new. Replacing the battery is also a good thing to try if your light is not coming on at all. If that does not fix the problem then it might be fuse-related (Source).

Quick Take: OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR Solar Flagpole Light

Sunnytech 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light

Sunnytech 2nd Generation Solar Flag Pole 20led Light, Brightest, Most Powerful and Stable, Longest Lasting & Most Flag Coverage, LED Downlight for Most 15 to 25 Ft In-Ground Flag Pole, Automatic,Black

Made of Eco-friendly and flame-retardant plastic, this option has 20 LED lights and weighs just over one pound. It fits most 15’-25’ flagpoles that have a ½” rod at the top and has six small solar panels in a circle that absorbs the sunlight during the day.

It automatically goes on when the sun goes down and off at dawn, often lasting the whole time in between even when cloudy and rainy weather prevents it from getting a full day of sun. These solar pole lights have been known to last three years or more.

Pros
  • It is easy to install, needing no extra tools besides the ones you might need to get to the top of your pole, and can be added in as short a time as 5 minutes.
  • checkThe three batteries are visible and easy to get to on the underneath which is very helpful for when they need to be replaced.
Cons
  • You might need to buy a new flagpole ornament if the shaft is too short to pass through the hole, and it does not include one with the flag pole light kits.
  • The lack of a wide range means that the light won’t reach the end of the flag when the wind is blowing.

PolePalUSA Double Row Solar Flagpole Top Light

PolePalUSA Double Row Solar Flagpole Top Light This option for lighting up your flag has a total of 32 LED lights set in two separate rows, some pointing almost straight down and some at a 45-degree angle in order to shed light on your flag even as is blows in the breeze. The most expensive option on my list today, it works on telescoping poles of almost any size, even up to 45’, and continues working well even in windy conditions.
Pros
  • Easy to cut design. The warranty is also unaffected when you cut the solar cover to perfectly fit your pool.
  • Diamond-shaped air pockets give you more heating per square inch than other types of solar covers.
Cons
  • The batteries are not visible and are slightly hard to get to when they need to be replaced.
  • banIt is very expensive to buy.

PISSION American Flag Pole Light

PISSION Flag Pole Lights Solar Powered, American Flag Pole Light Weatherproof Auto ON/Off Night Light Downlight for 15 to 25ft Flag Pole Pission’s option for lighting a flag is the cheapest one on my list and has a circle of 20 lights with three groups of two smaller lights inside that. Designed to give about 10 hours of light as long as it has at least 8 hours of sun, it may not last until morning but will last most of the night. It weighs just less than a pound and comes with an attachment that enables you to use this light for other things besides putting it on the top of your flag pole. This can be a good thing to have available should you decide for whatever reason that you don’t want it above your flag anymore, since it wouldn’t be a complete waste.
Cons
  • It is not as durable and doesn’t last as long, sometimes having problems within a few months.
  • banIt is not as weather-proof, meaning that bad storms stand a chance of getting water inside it and damaging it.
Pros
  • checkIt is easy to install with the batteries being visible on the underneath for ease of access.
  • checkThe attachment makes it possible to use this solar light on camping trips, clipping it to a rope or something at night so that is shines light in your tent or over your picnic table, giving you hours longer of camping fun.

DBF Solar Lights Outdoor

DBF Solar Lights Outdoor, Upgraded 18 LED Waterproof Solar Spotlights Solar Landscape Lights Adjustable Auto On/Off Wall Security Lighting for Garden Yard Pathway Driveway Pool, Pack of 2 (Cool White) My last option is a solar flag spotlight that shines up at your flag from the ground. It comes most often in a pack of two, which is good because you need at least two spotlights for your flag. The battery lifespan is around 2 years and it shines better on shorter poles that the light can reach easier. Two brightness modes and the fact that these can be wall-mounted, gives you options, especially if your flag is near a building or wall. It can be angled upward at almost any angle to highlight your flag and can highlight your landscaping too.
Pros
  • checkThe solar panel is attached to the spotlight, meaning that there are no cords or anything to worry about.
  • checkIt can move 120 degrees so you can point it wherever you want, and if you later decide to get rid of your flag you can use it to highlight your landscaping.
Cons
  • You will have to watch where you mow if you put it on the ground, and you will also have to make sure that it is not shaded by trees or anything that will prevent it from getting enough sunlight.
  • banIf attaching it to the side of a building the adhesive can damage the paint if you try to remove it.

Conclusion

Each of the in-ground flagpole lighting options that I told you about our amazing options. But my favorite would be the Sunnytech 2nd Generation Solar Flagpole 20 LED Light. Its solar-powered LED lights can shine all night long without any problems. At the same time, it is quite reasonably priced.

Since it is a top light and never in the way, it is a huge plus in my opinion. Especially since I sometimes forget to move things on the ground before mowing. And the batteries are one of the main reasons why a solar light eventually wears out. Having batteries that are handy is definitely a feature I like about it.

Solar Umbrella Lights: Choosing The Best LED Outdoor & Patio Lighting

Solar umbrella lights can be an amazing addition to almost any patio or deck. A patio umbrella with solar-powered LED lights gives you shade outdoors during the day. Also, the soft light at night can make it very nice for entertaining guests outdoors. My top pick out of all the options is the Leisurelife 9’ Solar Light Patio Umbrella with Black Base.

This is my top pick because it has all the right features at a reasonable price. Plus some added ones that are simply nice to have.

The Top Recommendation

Leisurelife 9’ Solar Light Patio Umbrella with Black Base

The Leisurelife 9’ Solar Light Patio Umbrella with Black Base is a great all-around umbrella. It comes in four different colors which makes it easy to match it with your existing lawn furniture.

And the eight-foot-tall height means that you shouldn’t have to worry about bumping your head underneath the umbrella.

The crank is also easy to open and close during windy weather. Though it can withstand 20mph winds just fine without needing to be closed.

Leisurelife 9' Patio Umbrella Beige with Black Base, 21' 50-lbs

The Upgrade Option

Seasons Sentry 11’ LED Solar Round Offset Umbrella

The Seasons Sentry 11’ LED Solar Round Offset Umbrella is both the largest one on my list and the most expensive. It does have other benefits that none of the others do.

Starting with its offset base which allows it to be used with tables that do not have a hole in the center to add an umbrella.

It also has an amazing tilting ability which allows it to tilt to 70 degrees. Also, it can be very useful when the sun is shining at an angle.

The Value Option

Ainfox 9ft Solar Patio Umbrella

The Ainfox 9ft Solar Patio Umbrella is the cheapest one on my list, but it has all of the basics you might need in a patio umbrella. The simple pole will fit in the hole in most patio tables and it comes in a few different colors.

Though it does not come with a stand of its own, if you have a stand for a broken umbrella and are looking to replace it, then this will likely fit your stand. As a bonus, the fabric is made to be fade resistant.

The Alternative Option

Sunlitec Solar String Hanging Umbrella Lights

The Sunlitec Solar String Hanging Umbrella Lights is a nice option. Especially if you already have a patio umbrella and do not wish to get a whole new one to have solar lights. It can be strung underneath any umbrella.

It has four different lighting modes to choose from which can be a very nice thing to set the mood. And the solar panel has the bonus feature of being able to power two strings of lights should you need a lot of light.

What You Can Do With Patio Umbrella Lights

While you might think that patio umbrellas are only for giving shade, there is actually a lot you can do with them. However, unlike certain folk tales, one of the few things you should never try with your patio umbrella is skydiving. Other than that your options are limitless!

Outdoor umbrella lights can sometimes look plain with just one solid color of fabric on them. So why not use your creativity and get to decorating? You can use fabric paints, lace, ribbon, or anything else you have on hand and turn your umbrella into a work of art.

Should you choose to get a solar umbrella that doesn’t have a base, you can always make your own DIY base. Then decorate it to go with your other outdoor furniture.

For those that are really good and have all the right tools and supplies, there is the option of making a DIY patio umbrella from scratch. And then buying some solar string lights. While this is possible to do, the end result won’t look as nice or last nearly as long as a well-made patio umbrella.

What You Should Look For In Solar Umbrellas

UV Protection And Waterproof Fabric

Spending too much time in the sun can be bad for you, and not just because you risk getting sunburned. Even being in the shade under an umbrella that does not have UV protection will only block one kind of UV rays, the other kind will still get through to you if your umbrella does not specifically have UV protection (Source).

The waterproof fabric might seem like a no-brainer. Most patio umbrellas do have this feature, but this is an essential thing to have. Even if the umbrella does not let the rain through if it is not specifically waterproof, it will mold over time. Especially in humid areas or places that get a lot of rain. While you can clean the mold off, it is both unhealthy and unsightly.

A Wind Vent At The Top

Perhaps you have seen those extra folds of fabric at the center of patio umbrellas and wondered what they were for, but they are actually a very good thing to have for two reasons. As their name implies, the wind vent allows wind to pass through. This helps to keep the umbrella from blowing over because of winds as easily and, in turn, helps to keep it stable.

The other thing that these vents help with is the heat. Since heat rises, these vents give the heat a way to keep rising instead of getting trapped in the umbrella, keeping it nice and cool in the shade instead of making an oven (Source).

Repairs For Your Solar Patio Umbrella

If you plan on keeping your patio umbrella for years, then knowing how to fix its more common problems is great. Sometimes it might just look like it needs a good cleaning from the dust and dirt, and this is actually very easy to do.

Strong winds can break one or more of the ribs in an umbrella of any kind. Plus, the impact of them falling over can break the ribs with or without wind being a factor at all. This can be fixed with a little time and a handful of easy to find supplies from the local hardware store.

Sometimes a pole can get bent when it gets hit with something or someone. And can cause it to quite noticeably be leaning. Instead of calling customer service or getting rid of it, you can easily fix it yourself.

Your solar lights themselves can misbehave at times, but there are a few steps you can go through to determine the cause as to why they are not working. Figuring out the problem is the first step to fixing it (Source).

Quick Take: OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR Solar Umbrella Light

Leisurelife 9’ Solar Lighat Patio Umbrella with Black Base

Leisurelife 9' Patio Umbrella Beige with Black Base, 21' 50-lbs This 9’ wide and nearly 8’ tall lighted patio umbrella has a black 20.5” wide and 5” tall base. It can be filled with water to make it over sixty pounds or emptied to make it light enough to move around easier. The fabric it’s made of provides both UV protection and is waterproof. It comes in beige, brown, green, and red which can help make sure that you can have a color that goes with your lawn furniture. It is made sturdy enough to handle 20 mph winds or more which can be a good thing if you live in windy areas. And it can stay lit for around eight hours, even if it is a cloudy day, which is often more time than what you will need it lit for.
Pros
  • The base enables it to be a stand-alone that needs no support, meaning that you can use it anywhere you want to.
  • The 45-degree tilt that it has helps you stay shaded in the early morning and late evening when the sun is shining at an angle.
Cons
  • The umbrella is so wide that when cranked closed the crank is hidden in the fabric, which means that to crank it back open you have to find the crank.
  • The on/off button, located on the ribs right underneath the top, can be hard to reach unless you are tall.

Seasons Sentry 11’ LED Solar Round Offset Umbrella

Seasons Sentry 11' LED Solar Round Offset Umbrella by This 11’ solar LED umbrella is quite large, yet it folds up nicely into a small area when not in use. The base is a square 40”x40” and is 6” high and the bottom of the base has grooved edges to help it not slide even on slippery surfaces. In addition to having LED lights along the ribs, this light-up umbrella also has a larger light in the center which gives off more light and can be useful for times when you want to see details. The lights can last eight hours or more which is plenty of light for most people.
Pros
  • The offset design can allow you to use it for tables that have no hole in the center for an umbrella. The structure of the offset allows it to tilt up to a 70 degree angle – almost vertical – which can be wonderful to block out evening and morning light as well as a neighbors annoying lights if needed.
  • It comes with the base which can be filled with sand or water. These kinds of bases can be easier to move around by simply emptying them.
  • The canopy can rotate either clockwise or counterclockwise around the base which can be a really good thing sometimes to avoid knocking things over.
Cons
  • Sand can be rather difficult to get out of the base should you choose to you that option to fill it.
  • It is expensive.

Ainfox 9ft Solar Patio Umbrella

Ainfox 9ft Solar Patio Umbrella with LED Light, Steel Umbrella Ribs Waterproof Prevent Bask in for Garden, Indoor, Outdoor Use without Base (Beige) This solar umbrella lighting option comes in brown, beige, red, or green and has the needed UV protection and waterproof fabric that is also fade resistant. The colors are deep and vivid and the umbrella has a small amount of tilting that it can do. It can run for six or seven hours if it has had enough light during the day to charge for seven to eight hours, so it is not the most efficient but it should still provide an adequate amount of light.
Pros
  • It is a cheap option that has all the necessary features for a solar umbrella light.
  • Without any base parts you need to assemble, it is a really quick and easy set up.
Cons
  • It does not come with a base or support of any kind so the only way to use it is in the center hole of a table, to buy a complete base that is compatible with it, or to make a base for it. A lack of a base also makes this option less sturdy in windy conditions.
  • At nearly eight feet in height, the on and off switch can be hard to reach without a stepper or standing in a chair unless you happen to be tall.

Sunlitec Solar String Hanging Umbrella Lights

Sunlitec Solar String Lights Waterproof LED Indoor/Outdoor Hanging Umbrella Lights with 25 Bulbs - 27 Ft Patio Lights for Deckyard Tents Market Cafe Gazebo Porch Party Decor If you already have an umbrella and want to make it into a solar umbrella with lights then this is a great option. It can attach to any umbrella and only needs 5-8 hours of sunlight to charge and lasts up to eight hours at night. The lights are spaced 10” apart and automatically come on when it gets dark, though this also means that they won’t work in the daytime.
Pros
  • It can be charged with its solar panel or through its USB charging port which means that it can be used indoors, outdoors, and for anything you wish to use it for. USB charging takes only four hours and can be handy to make sure that the lights are bright even after really cloudy days.
  • It has four different lighting modes to choose from and also has the added feature of letting you extend the length by simply buying more lights and attaching them at the end; each solar panel being able to sustain two strings of lights.
Cons
  • You need to already have an umbrella or buy one separately if you want to use this for solar umbrella lighting.
  • The glass bulbs that protect the lights from getting wet can shatter fairly easily, so handle them with care.

Conclusion

While all the items I went over are great, my favorite is the one made by Leisurelife. Their outdoor umbrella with solar lights has UV protection and waterproof fabric as well as the wind vent in the top that is so nice to have.

It also has a nice base so I can place it wherever I want and some tilting ability to help it give more shading options. Plus, it can stay lit for me even after cloudy days for as long as I need it for. It is nice for when I plan a get-together since it is one less thing I have to worry about as I prepare for my guests.

Installing outdoor lighting can add value to your home and garden by accenting that hard work you put in during the day, at night. Electric lights are bright but require a nearby outlet and raise your power bill. Battery-powered lights are also an option but are expensive in the long term.

Solar is a one time purchase that requires little thought during and after installation, allowing years of enjoyment from your lights.  This makes solar stakes are a good choice for many gardens.

These lights come in many fun shapes and sizes that will bring a smile to your face when you see them light up at night. This guide will help you choose between many different options, deciding which might best fit your need.

The Value of Solar

The sun is a huge generator of energy that can be converted into electricity through the use of photovoltaic cells. When placed beside each other on a panel, the individual cells absorb sunlight and start knocking electrons loose. These electrons start flowing, creating a current which can be fed through wires into a battery for later use. Falling prices have made solar a reasonable solution for household power.

How to Choose the Best Solar Garden Stake Lighting

Solar lights require no plugs or extension cords and are simple to use and enjoy. Stick it in the ground where the sun shines and wait for nightfall! An outdoor solar powered garden stake is the best option for simplicity.  They are budget-friendly and require little to no maintenance.

Sunshine

Keep in mind you will need 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily to provide enough energy to run the lights throughout the night. Overcast days can still provide power but the lights may end up faltering halfway through the night. Keep that in mind when considering the placement of your lights at home.

The Solar Panel

The solar panel is probably the most important part to consider during the purchase. The quality and size will directly affect how much energy you can gather for use at night. Solar panels are measured in watts or mAh,  a higher number equaling more power. Look for larger panels that can absorb several watts/mAh of energy.

Battery Capacity

Battery capacity is measured in mAh. A higher number means more electricity can be stored in the battery. Keep in mind larger batteries either require longer charge times or bigger solar panels to reach full capacity. To compare battery sizes and solar panels, divide mAh of the battery by the mAh of the solar panel to determine about how many hours of direct sunlight you’ll need for a full charge.

Brightness

Solar LED garden stakes are easily seen from a distance, accenting your garden and home. Brightness will be similar among brands. Most differences are in run and charge times due to battery capacity and solar panel efficiency.

Waterproof Ratings

Ingress protection ratings, IP for short, are an international standard used to determine the sealed effectiveness of electrical products. The first digit indicates intrusion protection from dust on a scale of one through six, six being completely dustproof. The second digit refers to moisture protection on a scale from one to eight, eight indicating protection from prolonged submersion. IP65 is a good rating to look for. It will ensure your unit is protected from dust and water spray in all directions.

Construction Materials and Durability

When purchasing outdoor equipment durability should be on your mind. Discoloring of lights, water damage, and broken stakes can reduce the enjoyment of your outdoor solar stake lighting. Make sure the product you select is made of quality materials that will last in the sun and rain. You should expect to replace your lights after 2-4 years of regular use.

Warranties

It is a good idea to check out the manufacturer’s warranty. It’s a good sign when a company stands behind their product, offering either replacements or refunds.

Adding a Personal Touch to Your Home

Look for something that expresses who you are and what you enjoy. Options to choose from include light-up moons, frogs, ladybugs, flowers, abstract shapes, gnomes, and more. Make your garden stand out.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Solar Light Garden Stakes

Installation of Your New Lights

Solar lights are simple to install but a few things deserve your attention. Soil composition will determine if you need to moisten the soil with water before installing the stake. Forcing a stake into the hard ground can break your lights or cause injury.

If the light detaches from the stake, install the stake in the ground first before attaching the light. You may consider installing multiple sets to prevent the lights from looking too lonely in your garden.

How to Choose the Best Solar Powered Mole Repeller

At first glance, moles look like animals you’d keep as pets. They look all cuddly and cute, but if you have a garden, you know how dangerous these animals can be; they leave hills of soil on your yard and eat up plant roots in your garden. Smoke bombs, traps, and poison can eliminate moles and other rodents, but they can harm your children and your pets. This is where you need a solar sonic mole repeller.

This best solar-powered mole repeller review was created to help you choose your yard’s best repeller.

How to Choose the Best Solar Rodent Repeller

There are so many solar-powered repeller brands today. While this gives consumers a more comprehensive selection of products to choose from, it might be a challenging task selecting the best, especially if you are buying repellers for the first time. Consider the following factors to pick the right solar sonic repeller.

Protection Range

Solar-powered mole repellers keep away moles from your garden by producing vibrations and sonic wave sounds underground. The sonic wavelengths determine the size of the area these repellers can protect; the frequency of waves produced can determine wavelengths. Most units will have between 400 and 1000 Hz. Repellers with a high pulse frequency will repel moles over a long distance.

Size of Your Garden

Your garden’s size and the frequency of the repellers you choose will determine how many sonic repellers you buy. A single solar-powered mole repellent unit will cover a radius of about 49 feet. This means that you should place these units at least 98 feet apart to achieve the best repellent results. Therefore, to get the best results, you need to know the size of your land and the range of protection of the repellent. Most units will show the area a repellent will cover on their product descriptions.

Repeller Construction

Solar-powered mole repellers are always exposed to the weather elements; a part of the unit has to be staked underground. Another feature is left above ground exposed to rain and snow and other elements. The units can get damaged by rain and intense sun.

To ensure that your unit lasts for long, choose one that is waterproof, anti-corrosive, and made of an anti-UV material. Most units are made of strong ABS plastic, others of aluminum alloy, and some with weak plastic. Avoid units made of light plastic as they do not offer value for money.

Charge Time and Run Time

How long does the solar panel take to charge the battery to full power? Most units take between 3 and 5 hours of exposure to full sunlight to charge fully. Some units are fitted with strong Li-Ion or Ni-MH batteries to last for up to four days after a single full charge. Such units are great if you live in an area that is always rainy. When shopping, pick a unit with a highly efficient panel and a high capacity battery.

Price and Warranty

When you are buying a solar vole repeller, you have to consider the price. Units designed with a large solar panel with a high capacity battery and a high frequency will be more expensive. Smaller units with weak plastic construction will cost less but will not last long. Choose a unit that will perform efficiently and last long.

The right unit should come with at least a 2-year warranty. Such a warranty shows that the manufacturer trusts in their products. Again, you are covered for at least two years.

Additional Features

Besides repelling moles, mole deterrent units are fitted with lights to decorate or illuminate your yard or garden. The lights are fitted just beneath the solar panel. You can choose between lights of diverse colors depending on the mood you want to create in your garden.

Some lights are fitted to go on and off automatically at dusk and dawn, respectively, but others have to be manually switched on and off. Repellent units with weak batteries should not have very bright lights, which will drain the battery power.

Why Choose Solar Powered Repellents?

There are different other ways of repelling or eliminating moles besides using solar-powered sonic repellents.

Safe and Eco-Friendly

Some people have used bleach, broken glass, razor blades, and petroleum products. While some of these methods may work, they are detrimental to your children and pets. These chemicals can affect the health of your children and pets if inhaled.

With solar mole repellent units, once you stake them on the ground, your work is done. Unlike chemicals that you have to prepare and burrow in the ground, the solar repellents are self-powered and do not need a lot of maintenance as long as they are exposed to the sun.

Chemicals might eliminate moles, but they may also eliminate beneficial microorganisms in your soil.

Cost-Effective in the Long Run

Solar-powered mole repellents might be relatively expensive to install, but they are cheaper than other means of repelling moles in the long run. Once installed, the units will last for years. With just a little maintenance, you can have the solar mole repellents for more than five years. This is unlike other methods of chasing away moles, such as natural oil-based repellents, which have to be burrowed into the ground every after a few weeks.

Do Solar Mole Repellers Affect Pets?

Solar-powered mole repellents work by producing ultrasonic sounds that are irritating to moles and other rodents. When moles hear these ultrasonic sounds, they perceive them as a danger, and they burrow away from your garden.

Dogs can hear some frequencies produced by the repellents. Before buying a solar-powered repellent, be sure it does not affect dogs. Again, before installing the repellers, notify your neighbors of your decision seeing that the moles will run to their gardens.

How to Choose the Best Solar Post Cap Lighting

The best solar lamp post lights will be an asset to the overall look of your home. Great-quality products are durable and function efficiently with an aesthetically-pleasing design. Here, you’ll find the specifics on what goes into leading solar LED post lights.

Waterproof

As with any electrical device installed outdoors, resistance to rain and snow are a must for solar post caps. Without some degree of water resistance, outdoor lighting may quickly be damaged when exposed to the elements.

The IP rating system, or “Ingress Protection” rating, is a standardized method for the degree of protection against liquids, dust, etc. that a device includes. An example of an IP rating is IP23. The first number, in this case 2, corresponds to the solid protection rating. The second number, in this case 3, refers to the liquid protection rating.

When determining how waterproof solar power lamp post lighting is, look at the second number in the IP rating. A number 4 means that the product is safe from water spray coming from all directions. A number 6 means that the product is safe from high-pressure jets coming from all directions. A number 8 is the highest liquid IP rating and means that the product is safe from immersion in water (to a level expressed by the product maker) (Source).

Size

Post caps need to be the correct size to fit the measurements of the poles that you’re looking to install them onto. Otherwise, the lights won’t fit and you won’t be able to install them.

The typical range of post size that solar pole lights fit onto is 3” by 3” to 6” by 6”. 4” by 4” are standard dimensions for wooden posts on porches and patios, so many post lights accommodate this size.

Number of Lights in Pack

Depending on the number of posts that you have in your yard, the number of post cap lights sold in a pack in a crucial detail to consider. Purchasing outdoor lights in bulk, with more units in a single pack, may be an affordable alternative to buying lights individually. Buying a multi-pack of lights will also ensure that all of the lights are the same and will match perfectly for a cohesive look.

Post Compatibility

Post cap lights vary in the type of poles that they may be installed onto. This is a critical factor to consider because if you buy a light fixture not designed for the type of pole in your yard, you may not be able to install it properly (if at all).

There are three main materials used to construct patio, porch, and landscaping poles: wood, vinyl, and PCV. Many post cap lights are designed to be installed onto wood posts because this is the most common type of pole found on residential properties.

If your home features PVC or vinyl posts, there’s no need to worry. There are still plenty of post cap light options available to you. Just be sure to take exact measurements of the poles on your property. Then compare them to the dimensions of the solar post caps that you’re considering.

Design

As with any component of your outdoor decor, you may want to ensure that your post cap lights appear cohesive. Many homeowners may consider matching the color of their posts to the color of their post cap lights so that the two coordinate. So, if you have wooden posts, consider light fixtures in black or brown colors. For vinyl and PVC posts, white and light-colored caps may be a more fitting option.

Homeowners with white picket fences may be concerned about matching shades of white when purchasing post caps. In this situation, the distinction between ivory and “bright white” can become crucial.

Post cap lights may have glass panes surrounding the bulb. This detail not only adds a touch of elegance to the overall design but also may reduce the harshness of the light emitted by an LED bulb.

Run Time From Charge

Solar lights from different manufacturers may vary in the number of hours from a single day of charge. The amount of light that a solar fixture can provide largely. Depends on the amount of sunlight an area receives over the course of a day. The quality of the light can make a difference, too.

Solar post lights are almost always “self-contained.” It means that the solar panels are located directly on the fixture itself. So, the panel will draw energy from the sun wherever the post cap is installed. The light manufacturers almost always advertise the number of hours of light you can expect from a single day’s charge. During the winter, you may expect the light to operate at 30% to 50% of its full capacity, due to the lessened amount of sunlight (Source).

How to Choose the Best Solar Garden Lights

You know your garden best. Consider aesthetics, size, and durability when selecting the right garden light. Walk around your garden and imagine each of the placements of the solar lights–and use objects of similar size to simulate the placement. We can often make the lights out to be bigger or taller than they are in our imaginations!

Aesthetics

The first major consideration. Durability and price are irrelevant if you don’t like the way that the garden lights look, and you’re probably motivated by looks in your purchase more than anything. If you love the way one of these lights on this list looks, I’d ignore all the other specs. They’re all good lights.

Gigalumi’s bronze lights and Brebant’s torches have the classiest looks, while the Tonulax’s lilies and CGN’s bubble towers have the most pizzaz. Gardens are often eclectic spaces.

The tendency might be to purchase the classy or pizzaz oriented lights based on matching what you already have, but I’d recommend using the solar lights to set up a contrast. If your garden is already classy, score some lights with pizzazz to set a talking-point. If your garden is already fun, bring the whole scene together with the classy solar lights.

Durability and Warranty

All of these lights are waterproof. The Gigalumi’s have a metal and glass design which makes them more durable than the Brebant’s plastic. Tonulax lilies have glass as well, while the bubble lights are plastic.

Gigalumi, Brebant, and Tonulax all offer a one-year replacement warranty, while CGN’s bubbles, the lone solar light out, only offer 180 days.

Price

Actually, all of these solar lights are similarly priced. A couple of packages (the lillies and bubbles) comes with only 2 lights each, and so are technically cheaper, around $20 a pop. The Gigalumi are around $50 for 6 lights. The Brebant torches are the most expensive.

Size

Size is a factor in most solar light considerations, but especially in garden lights. Gardens usually cram a lot of plants and designs into smaller spaces, and you might buy a 1-foot tall solar light for the back planter that doesn’t even peek over the tomato plants in front of it.

Check the sizing, and measure the location before selecting your lights. The Gigalumi lights on this list are lovely, but only a foot tall. If you’re placing lights in the back of the garden, they might not be right for you. The solar torches and bubble lights are both over 2-feet tall, ideal for the back. Use the Gigalumi and solar lilies for the front.

Gigalumi’s Solar Lights

GIGALUMI 6 Pcs Solar Lights Outdoor, Bronze Finshed, Glass Lamp, Waterproof Led Solar Lights for Lawn, Patio, Yard, Garden, Pathway, Walkway and Driveway
The beautiful bronze and glass Gigalumi solar lights are the classiest, most basic light on this list. These high power solar garden lights cast warm white light over paths, happy growing plants, and nighttime strolls. The glass pattern casts a lovely fragmented light which illuminates without harshly casting.

The bronze finish makes them look great before sunset as well! Honestly, these are my favorite lights if you’re going to throw some backyard summer parties. They look lovely in the daytime and classy at night.

Pros
  • Bronze and glass makes them extremely durable, with a waterproof and freeze-resistant design.
  • Nice warm light complimented by finished bronze and glass. Definitely the most fashionable daytime aesthetic on this list.
  • One-year replacement warranty.
  • The Price is very reasonable for getting the full six lights. Comes out to less than $10 per light.
Cons
  • Anytime you buy glass solar lights, there’s a danger for kids and pets with broken glass.
  • Only a foot tall, and might get lost behind plants if you’re looking to put solar lights back in your garden. Works great on the edges though!
  • Late-blooming lights. Whereas the others come on more quickly, these wait until it’s fully dark to switch on.
  • Not super bright, mainly an ambient glow.

Brebant’s Solar Torches

Aityvert Solar Lights, 43' Flickering Flames Torch Lights Outdoor Waterproof Landscape Decoration Lighting Dusk to Dawn Auto On/Off Security Flame Lights for Yard Garden Pathway Driveway 4-Pack
Breban’ts LED solar garden lights are sturdy three-foot torches with a warm, welcoming fire glow. If the great warranty, nice height, and beautiful realistic aesthetics are enough to overcome the price point for you, then these are the best solar lights on this list.

Great charge time means that they’ll always come on at night, especially during the summer. The only complaints are the weaker plastic construction, and the charge time during winter.

Pros
  • 12-months warranty
  • The best aesthetics on this list with a warm, yellow-orange glow.
  • 3-foot size puts them above low garden plants for full illumination.
  • They really do look like torches! When people see them from a distance who aren’t familiar with the product, they tend to think the torches are real.
  • In the summer they’ll charge enough to still be on in the morning when you wake up!
Cons
  • Price. You’ll pay around double for the solar torches.
  • In the winter, the charge time can be cut in half. It May only light up for around 5 hours.
  • Plastic construction is a little disappointing. Not as strong as it could have been.

Tonulax’s Lily Solar Flowers

Solar Lights Outdoor - New Upgraded Solar Garden Lights, Multi-Color Changing Lily Solar Flower Lights for Patio,Yard Decoration, Bigger Flower and Wider Solar Panel (2 Pack,Purple and Red)
If you’re looking for a cheaper garden light to blend in and accent the space instead of illuminating it, the lily solar flowers are perfect. They blend in during the day and give a subtle glow at night. The lily design keeps your garden space feeling natural! I love the posable design. Comes with one purple and one red flower, and the lights inside slowly change colors.

Great refund policy, durable glass design, and weatherproof construction means that if durability is a concern, these flowers give you peace of mind knowing your garden will be well lit for a while! Check out how they look here.

Pros
  • Realistic enough to blend into your garden during the day. Posable stems and petals help you position the flower light perfectly.
  • Cheaper than the other lights, only around $20 for a 2-pack.
  • 6-month refund and 12-month return policies.
  • Work great in rain and humidity!
Cons
  • With the glass construction and the tendency to blend in, I’ve found that shattering glass and sharp edges can be a concern. Place them out of the way!
  • The flower design isn’t ideal for putting them right next to a path or as stand-alone units, because they look somewhat tacky when you do this. If you buy these, blend them into the garden plants.

CGN’s Solar Bubble Lights

CGN Garden Solar Lights Outdoor Solar Acrylic Bubble RGB Color Changing Solar Powered for Garden Patio Backyard Pathway Decoration (4PCS)

If you’ve got a yard that needs a little bit of pop, then these solar panel garden lights may be just the fix. I love the long tube of color and brightness. The changing colors is a nice touch too. The right solar powered garden lighting really depends on the garden, so I’d be careful when ordering these.

They might look really tacky if you don’t have the yard for it. Use them to accent an otherwise classy garden design–not to make a scattered garden design look classy. Still, if you’ve got a lovely garden with stone and greenery, then these lights might be perfect to nuance the style.

Pros
  • A flair and style you won’t find in many other lights.
  • Charge really well, even with a bit of shade or clouds.
  • The brightest solar light on this list with the huge, glowing tube!
  • Decent price for the 2 lights.
Cons
  • A 2-foot beam of color has to be used well or it will look really tacky and gaudy in your garden.
  • While other lights on this list feature a one-year replacement policy, these only give you 180 days for a full-refund return.
  • While the light itself is 2-feet tall, the lit up-part (the bubbles) is only about a foot.

Conclusion

My pick for solar garden lights is the Gigalumi. The bronze and glass construction is classy, and they will bring your garden together with a nice warm white ambiance. The price is reasonable, less than $10 per light, and the warranty and durability scores are solid.

The only drawbacks are a less than perfect brightness and a small size. The Gigalumi aren’t the “illuminate my whole garden lights.” If you want illumination, the torches or bubble lights give you more brightness. But for class and durability, I’d recommend the Gigalumi garden lights.

How to Choose the Best Solar Grow Lights

Around 80% of Americans live in urban areas. As more people collect in large cities looking for work, we must develop creative solutions for growing food and commodity crops within those cities and surrounding areas. Vertical farming and container farms are becoming more prevalent, and the desire to expand one’s food indoors is increasing as our environment, and food production needs change. Gone are the days of cheap fossil fuel and reckless burning of energy resources. We need solutions, and a solar is a viable option.

We will be discussing solar grow lights and the variables you should consider before making a purchase. Energy usage, light spectrum, light intensity, generated heat, and size of your grow will all need to be balanced to achieve success with indoor solar-powered lighting. With several light options to choose from, we will go over types of lights, what to look for in a light, and other things you should consider purchasing for your solar-powered grow room.

Types of Solar Grower Lights

There are three main categories of light systems you can use for your Indoor solar greenhouse lights.

Fluorescent

These bulbs can be useful for smaller grows, house plants, seedlings, or auxiliary light. There are three bulb styles to choose from(T12, T8, and T5). The T denotes tube while the number indicates how many eighths of an inch the tubes’ diameter is. T12 lights, which are being phased out, generate electricity through electromagnetic induction, a less efficient method than the electronic circuitry In newer model lights.

The main difference between T8 and T5 lights is size. T5 lights are 40 percent smaller but can contain just as much or more light energy than T8 fluorescents. T5 lights are the most expensive option but will give you the best results. These lights are pretty energy efficient but won’t work for more extensive growing or large flowering plants.

LED

These lights are compact, safe, use less electricity, have a greater light intensity, and generate less heat compared to more traditional lighting options. NASA was a pioneer in LED use to grow plants in space and induce alertness in astronauts. We can control the light spectrum emitted from the LED by altering the material they are made of, enabling light in the photosynthetic spectrum while reducing other wavelengths.

This reduces the power needed and heat produced while still exceeding the performance of other light systems. Another significant benefit of LEDs over more powerful HID bulbs is the ability to use a varying light spectrum to encourage the growth you want. LED style lighting would be my first choice for a solar-powered grow. LEDs are an expensive initial investment but will pay themselves off in the long term. With the right expectations and planning, off-grid LED lighting can be possible.

High intensity discharge, or HID

This grows lights are mighty but are expensive to run, hot, and power-hungry. They are great for plants that need high-intensity light to flower and fruit and are best for commercial growers who have a larger budget and aren’t concerned with energy usage.

They come in two varieties that are usually used in conjunction with one another. High-pressure sodium(HPS) bulbs produce low spectrum(red) light used in plants’ flowering. Metal halide(MH) bulbs, with their high range (blue) light, are used for vegetative growth. Both vegetative and bloom spectrum lighting must be used for the best results. Keep in mind you need to purchase two sets of bulbs and possibly two different ballasts, depending on the model chosen, when using this system.

Vegetative vs Bloom

When growing with indoor grow lamps, farmers must vary light spectrum and day length to get their desired growth plants. The growth before flowering is considered the vegetative stage and is controlled by day length. For example, with cannabis, lights should be lit for around 18 hours in a more blue spectrum light to encourage vegetative growth.

The second phase is considered the bloom phase, where the plant will produce flowers and fruit. This growth stage requires longer nights than the vegetative stage, usually a 12/12 hour split, with a light geared more toward the red spectrum.

Light Spectrum

Light from the sun contains the entire spectrum from ultraviolet(UV) to infrared. Plant biologists consider 400nm(red)- 700nm(blue) wavelength light available to plants for photosynthesis. Grow lights that cover this full spectrum will give you the best growing results. Some light models have an available switch that can set the light to either vegetative or bloom growth.

This is a useful feature as it reduces the need for additional lights while improving growth quality. Look for spectroradiometric data from manufacturers that measures energy in watts per wavelength. Utilizing data will allow you to compare wavelengths of light available to your plants.

Light Intensity

Different plants need different light intensities. Even single plants require different intensities during different growth stages. Light intensity given off by grow lights is measured in watts. A more specific measurement is Photosynthetic photon flux density, or PPFD, measured in μMol/m2/s.

This measurement tells you the PAR(photosynthetically available radiation) usable for plant growth, or the number of available light particles hitting a square meter area in one second. The full sun provides approximately 2000 μMol/m2/s. Intensity can be varied by purchasing a more powerful light or moving the light closer to your plants.

Duration (Light Cycles)

As plants progress through their growing cycle, we can influence biological processes such as the growth rate and buds/fruit setting by altering light cycles. A light cycle is how much light time and dark time the plant gets daily. When a plant is exposed to light radiation, it can chemically convert this energy, along with carbon dioxide and water, into oxygen and glucose.

This energy is stored in the plants and used for cellular respiration. Cellular respiration occurs during dark hours. The plant chemically converts its stored glucose into carbon dioxide, water, and ATP energy molecules used for plant growth and reproduction.

Energy Usage

The amount of energy required to grow plants is immense, and you must consider this when choosing which light system to use. Power needs will change as the plants’ progress through their growth cycle, and the farmer starts altering day length and light spectrum.

LED lights will use the least amount of energy, while HID lighting will use the most. Fluorescent lighting is also efficient and can be useful for small grows and supplementary light. I suggest using a LED grow lights system as energy-efficient and can deliver a great product, saving you money in the long run.

Short vs Long Day Plants

Different varieties of plants have different light needs. Short day plants only produce flowers when day length is less than about 12 hours. These include many spring and fall flowering plants like poinsettias and chrysanthemums. Long-day plants, on the other hand, require more than 12 hours of sunlight to enter bloom.

Summer crops like lettuce, spinach, potatoes, and California poppies bloom when the days are long. Other plants like tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, and some strawberries are considered day-neutral. These plants form flowers regardless of day length. Keeping day lengths in mind can help you choose crops that use less light, saving energy.

Installation and Additional Purchase Considerations

When installing your new grow lights, you will need a way to hang the lights above your plants. You will also need a way to raise the fixtures as the plant grows in height. This can be done with a pulley system, or a chain hung from the ceiling, allowing you to hang the light from different chain links as the plant grows.

It would be best if you considered purchasing a timer to control light cycles along with some form of ventilation to keep air moving. For a full solar light setup, you’ll need a solar panel to collect energy from the sun, an MPPT(maximum power point tracking) controller to optimize amperage to the battery.

A deep cycle battery to store energy and prevent damage from excessive discharge, a power inverter to convert DC to AC, and of course, your grow light. Greenhouse LED grow lights can supplement sunshine for needy plants during short and cloudy winter days.

Sun System Digital 400W Complete System

Sun System Grow Lights - Digital 400 Complete System - 400W | 120/240V - Plug and Play Grow Lamp For Hydroponics and Greenhouse Use I have included this Sun Systems grow lights HID fixture as an alternative to the other LED lights recommended. This complete 400w system has a built-in digital ballast that allows you to run the light at 250 or 400 watts, with either HPS or MH bulbs. This HID light will penetrate the canopy surface, delivering light to lower leaves, improving the energy the plant is able to absorb. Highly reflective aluminum insert concentrates the light where you need it most. The power-coated steel housing is attractive, durable, and fire-resistant. The light utilizes an E29 mogul base. When purchasing a 400w MH bulb, you must get the BT28(reduced jacket) lamp in order for it to fit. The LEC315 ballast is low frequency and is under the FCC threshold for measurable interference.

Specs

Pros
  • Powerful HID lights
  • Can run 250 or 400 watt bulbs
  • Digital ballast supports HPS and MH bulbs
  • Effectively covers 3’x3’ growing area
  • Cheaper than LED options of same intensity
  • Modest heat generation compared to some HID fixtures
Cons
  • Draws more power than LED fixtures
  • Must purchase bulbs separately
  • Bulbs need replacement after heavy use
  • Must have some form of ventilation

Final Thoughts About Choosing a Solar Powered Grow Light

The benefits of indoor solar powered grow lighting will become more pronounced as technology prices drop, and our outdoor environment becomes less suitable for crop production. When choosing a solar grow light, you have a few considerations to make. A solar setup can save money in the long run but is a large initial investment, and you must plan it out accordingly. You can check out outdoor solar lights as well.

We have discussed what makes a solar grow lamp desirable and what to look for in a light. I choose the G8 240w LED grow light for its mix of power and energy efficiency. With a max power draw of 140w, this light is compatible with a smaller solar setup.

Simple, full-spectrum operation with no veg/bloom switch simplifies the growing process while still delivering good results. You are able to purchase specific 90w red flower boosting lights that draw minimal power if flower density is your main priority. I recommend this light to beginner indoor gardeners looking for a relatively cheap and effective light that can be used on your solar-powered grow grid.

Growing plants can be an exciting and profitable venture if planned out correctly. Use the information in this guide to help you determine what grow light best fits your dream solar growth.
